We spent the day at school as usual. Most people ignored us, fortunately, but the real assholes annoyed us. They liked to call us fags, emos and stuff like that. We usually ignored them, but I was glad that I at least had Jared. He was stronger than me and knew how to fight when it was necessary. He even beat up a guy who had stolen my schoolbag and wanted to throw it in the toilet. Now this guy will never look at us again. I think faggot might actually be an accurate term in my case. Im weak and can only hide behind Jared if someone picks on me. No wonder the other students think were together. But at least we have each other.
After school, I only went home to put my bag away. My mom knew that I always stayed at Jareds until bed time so she wouldnt be bothered if I came in and left the house after three minutes. She wouldnt even wonder if I didnt come home at night, because she knew that I fell asleep easily.
I shouted a Hello! when I came in the front door. I ran upstairs to my room, threw my bag under my bed and quickly changed my clothes. Jared always waited at the front door for me, even though our houses were only a few meters apart. I saw my mother standing in the hallway, waiting for me, when I ran downstairs.
Hey, darling. Are you going to spend the night at Jareds?
I think so. Not sure, I answered
You know that your dad, me and the Vincents are going out tonight, right?
Uhum. I replied, because I had forgotten about that. Okay, bye. And have fun, I said as I walked out the door, where Jared waited for me.
So our parents are not going to be at home tonight? Jared asked me after I closed the door.
No, but what difference does that make? Jared only smiled at me. I wondered what he wanted to say but shrugged it aside.
Hello, Mr. and Mrs. Vincent I shouted cheerfully when we entered Jareds home.
Oh, hello, Eric. How was school? came the friendly reply from the living room.
Just as always, I answered, smiling as I appeared in the doorway to the living room. I heard Jared grunting behind me; he obviously felt ignored. We all laughed but finally Mrs. Vincent came and hugged him in welcome.
Still sulking, he pulled on my wrist to drag me upstairs to his room when Mrs. Vincent said,
Hey, Jared. Theres cake, if you two want some later. Its that lemon cake you like so much. Jared forgot about his pout and started smiling. There was nothing better on earth than sweets, from his point of view.
He sighed and fell down on his bed after he closed the door to his room. I hesitated a bit before I sat down on his bed as well. I wanted to lean back against the bed frame, but as expected Jared wrapped his arm around me.
What do you want? I asked as always, but not in a complaining manner.
Cuddle with you, came the simple answer. You have to console me.
I sighed but leaned against him. I knew every attempt at escape would fail. He held me like a stubborn kid holds a teddy bear, never wanting to let go. I didnt know how long we sat like that in silence, but suddenly we heard footsteps. Jareds mother showed up and told us that they were about to leave. We said good-bye, and a few minutes later we heard the door shut and the car drive off.
Do you want some cake now? Jared suddenly broke the silence.
Sure, why not, I answered and moved to get up.
Sit down and wait, Jared ordered and made me sit back down. Ill bring you your cake. Maybe you can decide which movie you want to watch.
I just nodded my head in response, still wondering why he was acting so odd. I took a look at his huge DVD collection. After a few minutes of searching, I finally found Underworld: Evolution. We had watched Underworld last time, so I thought we could watch the sequel now. I put the DVD down on his desk and waited for Jared to come back He was taking a long time, so I opened one of the windows and looked out into the night. The air was very chilly, because it was late fall, but I ignored my shivering and watched the stars. I heard Jared come back after a few moments but just kept on starring into the night. I saw Jareds smile in the reflection of the window but pretended like I hadnt noticed him.
